ONLINE ASSOCIATION – SEND YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS NOW!

Just as we try to find organic yarns, we are also thinking about how we can make our Association more viable in connection with the environment and economy.
Among other things, we can save on sending out newsletters by post. Naturally you will still be sent the new sample cards by post, but the newsletter will be sent to your email address.
For you to receive the newsletter, we must have your email address, which should be sent to berthe.forchhammer@gmail.com And if this had been an email newsletter, then you could have sent an email to Berthe straight away. We need to set to work and start linking up with one another through exciting websites, which offer us fun and inspiration.
See you online.

LABORATORIUM AT OFFICINET

The exhibition concept Laboratorium (Laboratory) is based on an exciting plan for using the Yarn Purchasing Association’s range of yarns and it has been put forward by the Association’s committee.
During Autumn 2009, selected members of the Association, and also members of Danske Kunsthåndværkere (Danish Society of Artist-Craftsmen), including jewellery designers, textile designers, ceramicists etc. will each receive a box containing a selection of fascinating and varied types of yarn from the Yarn Purchasing Association. From the contents of the box, each individual will produce a work/design/experiment according to their own choice, construction method and size. These many different products will form a joint exhibition, to take place at Officinet (Bredgade 66, Copenhagen), which is a perfect setting.
We hope that this exhibition will allow us to show off the multiplicity of exciting experiments and designs produced by our members, and the Artist-Craftsmen, in combining the many interesting yarn qualities that the Association has in stock.
In connection with the exhibition of Laboratorium, we will also hold the Annual General Meeting at Officinet.

DORTHE MERETE LYKKE JENSEN

Dorthe is a new member of the committee – welcome!
Originality, quality and experimentation are fundamental values for the textile designer Dorthe Merete Lykke Jensen who graduated from the Design School in Kolding in 2008, as an M.A. with knitting as her specialism. She also trained as a textile tutor at Skals Textile Seminary.
Dorthe is based in Kolding from where she runs her freelance business, teaching knitting, lecturing and carrying out varied design commissions for customers.
She finds inspiration from, among other things, current and abstract topics, such as the stock market, prejudices, integration etc. She challenges the well-known and traditional knitting techniques in a playful and experimental process using colours, patterns and materials to develop innovative textiles. Dorthe designs complex textile pieces and has expertise in putting together and using the intrinsic properties and textures of the materials, and she often uses interesting yarns from the Yarn Purchasing Association.
The results are combinations which are full of contrast, and textiles which often have a sculptural quality, balancing the delicate and feminine against a raw and robust effect. Dorthe considers her work to be a combination of craft and design. She designs for aware consumers who value unique and exclusive slow fashion. Her textiles will be current for more than just one season.

Photo 1 is inspired by Carlsberg shares, made in light grey crepe wool, monofilament and white silk 120/2.

Photo 2 is inspired by Vesta shares, and the materials include 1 thread each of light and dark grey crepe yarn, together with white silk 60/2. Various types of yarn, in shades of grey, are laid into the knitting – alpaca, viscose, wool and silk.

In 2006 Dorthe worked as a trainee with the Japanese fashion designer Yoshiki Hishinuma in Tokyo. The traineeship gave her a fascinating insight into the Japanese way of working and the manufacture of textiles. The Japanese aesthetic has influenced Dorthe’s own Nordic sense of design.
Dorthe is also selling her design at some of the crafts markets. She gives lectures about the many contrasts to be found in Japan and the exciting textiles she designed for Hishinuma. She also lectures on the development of the exclusive knitted textiles for which her inspiration was 5 Danish companies and and the stock market’s Black Monday, 21st January 2008.
More information about Dorthe can be found on her website http://www.dmlj.dk/

MAGICAL MATERIALS IN ENGLISH
Lotte Dalgaard’s book “Magical Materials in Weaving”, which is a practical and inspirational handbook on weaving with active, overspun and elastic yarns, has been a great success in Denmark.
Lotte has bought up the remainder of the stock and the book can now be bought with an English translation on a CD, which is in a plastic pocket at the back of the book. The translation is by Ann Richards and all measurement are given in inches, as well as the metric system.
The book, with English translation can be ordered direct from Lotte: lotte.dalgaard.@pc.dk

or by phone +45 4614 1012. For members living in the UK, the book can be orderd from Ann Richards acostall@yahoo.com For further information contact Lotte by email.

Have a good time with the new yarns! The committee

June 2011
Press
Release – Lesley Lister: Textile Designer

Title:
Horsehair Lampshades?

Lesley Lister is an innovative textile designer, sourcing horsehair and paper from Denmark to create a range of stylish contemporary lampshades. Her work celebrates the intrinsic qualities of a knit: flexibility, elasticity, movement, and structural form.

Inspiration has come from Scandinavian and Japanese artists using constructed textiles in architectural spaces. She is excited by the use of contemporary materials such
as stainless steel, monofilament and paper in what is generally perceived as a very traditional craft.

Her interest in materials lead her to experiment with horsehair, paper and wire
through a project with GIF (Garnindkobsforeningen of 1998) the Yarn Purchasing
Association of Denmark. 17 designers were invited to participate in the
exhibition ‘Laboratorium’ in Copenhagen in March 2010 using a selection of GIF
yarns.

She found that the structural nature of these materials allowed them to form a three
dimensional shape, ideally suited to the creation of lampshades. The addition
of light highlights the structure and texture of the materials, the lining
allows light to come through, creating pattern and texture. Each lampshade is
handmade with bespoke frames and unique.

Prices range from £135 for a small horsehair lampshade suitable for a bedside table to
£260 for a large shade made from paper, silver metallic yarn and wire. You can
buy the shades on Lesley’s website www. knittedlampshades.co.uk where you will find
photographs and specifications for each individual shade.

Lesley will be showcasing the lampshades at the Liverpool Design Show, Ocober 7th-9th
2011.
