Press Release – Lesley Lister: Textile Designer
Title: Horsehair Lampshades
Lesley Lister is an innovative textile designer, sourcing horsehair and paper from Denmark to create a range of stylish contemporary lampshades. Her work celebrates the intrinsic qualities of a knit: flexibility, elasticity, movement, and structural form.
Inspiration has come from Scandinavian and Japanese artists using constructed textiles in architectural spaces. She is excited by the use of contemporary materials such
as stainless steel, monofilament and paper in what is generally perceived as a very traditional craft.
Her interest in materials lead her to experiment with horsehair, paper and wire
through a project with GIF (Garnindkobsforeningen of 1998) the Yarn Purchasing
Association of Denmark. 17 designers were invited to participate in the
exhibition ‘Laboratorium’ in Copenhagen in March 2010 using a selection of GIF
yarns.
She found that the structural nature of these materials allowed them to form a three
dimensional shape, ideally suited to the creation of lampshades. The addition
of light highlights the structure and texture of the materials, the lining
allows light to come through, creating pattern and texture. Each lampshade is
handmade with bespoke frames and unique.
Prices range from £135 for a small horsehair lampshade suitable for a bedside table to
£260 for a large shade made from paper, silver metallic yarn and wire. You can

Lesley will be showcasing the lampshades at the Liverpool Design Show, Ocober 7th-9th
2011.
